Richard Tice: “After Britain leaves the EU, it should only contribute money towards the funding of specific programmes which we continue to commit to – nothing else”

Richard Tice - Leave Means Leave

Responding to reports that Britain will continue to pay money to Brussels after Brexit and reports that MPs are plotting for Britain to remain in the EEA, Richard Tice, Co-Chair of Leave Means Leave said:

“After Britain leaves the EU, it should only contribute money towards the funding of specific programmes which we continue to commit to – nothing else.

“Britain’s contribution to the EU budget is very much like a being a member of a golf club. You pay your membership fee annually to contribute to the facilities you are using. If after being a member for a number of years, you decide to leave the golf club, you hand in your notice and you no longer pay a membership fee. You are not expected to pay a severance fee in order to fund a new green you will never again play on or to refurbish a bar you will no longer drink at. This is exactly the same as Britain’s membership of the EU.

“Reports that some Conservative MPs are plotting with Labour to keep Britain in the European Economic Area are worrying, although thankfully, I suspect it is hot air and bluster from a former EU Commissioner’s son – Stephen Kinnock MP. Remaining in the EEA is a betrayal of Brexit. It would effectively mean that Britain remains in the EU but with even less of a say than we previously had. Freedom of movement – which was a major reason why British voters chose to leave the EU – would continue.

“When Conservative MPs and Labour MPs stood in the general election in June, they stood on a mandate of their respective manifestos of leaving the single market and customs union, taking back control of our money and our laws and crucially controlling Britain’s borders. Any backsliding by any Conservative or Labour MPs will be the ultimate betrayal of our democracy and would be unforgivable.”
