Co-chair of Brexit-supporting group Leave Means Leave Richard Tice condemned George Soros’ donation to Best for Britain as an attempt to “overthrow” the UK Government.
Speaking on Channel 4 News, Mr Tice said: “This is a foreign billionaire who is trying to destabilise and overthrow one of the greatest democratic democracies and governments in the world just to suit his own ends as he has done elsewhere in the world.
“He has no right to interfere and it’s clearly so bad that even people like Gina Miller, the founder of Best for Britain, has resigned and has come out to say this is wholly inappropriate.
“Overthrow is completely appropriate because that’s what they are trying to do.
“They are trying to destabilise this Government so that it falls and therefore they hope that that might lead towards a second referendum.
“And what happens then if we have a second referendum and let’s say in the unlikely event the Remain win?
“What do we do then? Do we go best of three?
“I mean, how ridiculous is that?”
The funding for the Best for Britain campaign came through one of Mr Soros’s foundation Open Society, but anti-Brexit group chairman, Lord Malloch-Brown, a former minister, and diplomat, said the group had followed rules governing financial contributions “to the letter”.
He said: “We have never hidden our agenda; we have been campaigning hard to win a meaningful vote on Brexit, which we did, and to keep all options on the table, including staying in the European Union.
“We, like millions of people, believe that Britain should lead, not leave Europe.
“We work with campaigners, businesses, unions, politicians and community groups to make sure everyone has a strong campaigning voice.”
