Back at Nifco UK in Stockton-on-Tees, John Longworth, co-chair of Leave Means Leave and former head of the British Chambers of Commerce, is also on Today.
He told business presenter Dharshini David that didn’t believe the 21 month Brexit transition period was needed.
“I still believe that the government could have a deal with the European Union which would not require a transition period, the transition period being quite a dangerous period of time for the UK because we’ll be a rule-taker will be a vassal state of the European Union,” he said.
“What the government need to do is set out very clearly what the post-Brexit economy will look like and all the good things that will happen to give business confidence, strike a Canada- style deal with the EU, which the EU have said they would accept and therefore could be done quickly, which would cover the vast majority of products, 98% of products would be covered.”
“We could then get on and leave within a few weeks so the transition period would be no longer than a few weeks,” he added.
