UK will be ‘vassal state’ under Chequers plan

Responding to the media reports of the Prime Minister’s proposed customs partnership to be presented at Chequers, John Longworth, Co-Chair of Leave Means Leave, commented:

“Early reports indicate that the Prime Minister and her civil service puppet masters are determined to force through the most feeble of proposals – something which is not Brexit, but in fact, ‘fake Brexit’.

“One of the many benefits of leaving the European Union and becoming an independent, forward-looking country is that we get to sign trade deals with some of the world’s largest economies.

“These plans concede that the UK’s ability to sign a trade deal with the United States – the world’s largest economy and the UK’s closest ally – will be severely restricted. This is likely also to be the case with other nations. What is the point of Brexit if we cannot freely sign our own trade deals?

“The ability to have a regulatory regime that suits the needs of our own economy is one of the most basic requirements for an independent nation, and this is something that the Prime Minister seems nonchalantly happy to surrender.

“Proposals for a ‘common rule book’ with the European Union for rules on all goods that will see the UK punished with ‘consequences’ if we diverge would be laughable if they were not so serious. No doubt under the instruction of the German Chancellor.

“To remain a vassal state under the thumb of the Brussels rule book is not what 17.4 million people voted for – our political masters would never be forgiven if they pursue such a path.”
