John Longworth: “The Chancellor and the civil service seem to be steering Brexit in a very negative direction”

Date: 15 08 2017

Responding to the publication of the Government’s customs union paper, John Longworth, Co-Chair of Leave Means Leave said:

“It is very concerning that the Government is taking a defeatist attitude with regards to securing trade deals with non-EU countries.

“Britain should not be limited to negotiating trade deals with the rest of the world during the transition period, we should be signing and implementing these deals.

“This approach will also prevent the UK from lowering the cost of living for hard working families and boost the economy via the removal of EU – imposed external tariffs.

“The inability to do these things will postpone the economic benefits of Brexit (perhaps indefinitely) and indicates a profoundly wrong-headed, post-Brexit economic policy.

“The Chancellor and the civil service seem to be steering Brexit in a very negative direction.

“Britain needs economic policies that will capitalise on the huge opportunities leaving the EU brings our country. There has been little evidence of this to date.”
